Fall 2016 & Fall 2017 Youth Soccer Changes

Coming Fall 2016, US Soccer will be making some fundamental changes to the way its programs are structured, including changes to how its member youth soccer clubs (including SSA) assign players to age groups, as well as making changes in the fall of 2017 to the playing format for the U12 and younger programs.

1. Fall 2016 Season Changes:

Players will be registered to age groups defined by calendar birthyear (Jan to Dec) rather than by approximate school year (Aug to July). The new age groups will be as follows:

  • U05 - 2012 birthyear
  • U06 - 2011 birthyear
  • U07 - 2010 birthyear
  • U08 - 2009 birthyear
  • U09 - 2008 birthyear
  • U10 - 2007 birthyear
  • U11 - 2006 birthyear
  • U12 - 2005 birthyear
  • U13 - 2004 birthyear
  • U14 - 2003 birthyear
  • U15 - 2002 birthyear
  • U16 - 2001 birthyear
  • U17 - 2000 birthyear
  • U18 - 1999 birthyear
  • U19 - 1998 birthyear

  • Examples:

    A. An Academy player with a Sept 2005 birthdate, who is currently a U10 for the Spring 2016 season, will migrate into the U12 age group for Fall 2016.
    B. A Recreational player with a Dec 2004 birthdate, who is currently in the U12 program (officially as a U11) will migrate into the U14 age group (officially as a U13) for Fall 2016.
    C. A Select player with a Nov 2003 birthdate, who is currently a U12 will migrate into the U14 age group for Fall 2016.

    2. Fall 2017 Season Changes:

Programs currently playing 6-a-side soccer will change to 7-a-side soccer and age groups currently playing 8-a-side soccer will change to 9-a-side.
