Academy OVERVIEW

Southern Soccer Academy offers Academy-level soccer training and gameplay for both boys and girls at under 9 (U9), under 10 (U10), under 11 (U11), and under 12 (U12) years old across all our Atlanta locations.

The goal of the program is to prepare our players for Select-level soccer at U13 and above by developing their technical and tactical skills in a high quality training and playing environment where an enthusiasm for, and a commitment to, the game is nurtured and rewarded. The program has over 100+ teams across the club, and is coached by licensed and experienced staff coaches working within a club-wide curriculum developed by our Director of Coaching and our Academy Directors. Players are offered the opportunity to accelerate their development by competing on a weekly basis in academy games against the best competition available from all over metro Atlanta, as well as attend pre- and post-season tournaments. The program is designed for the player with a high level of commitment to his or her soccer development, and requires a greater time and financial commitment than the typical Recreational program.

Fees include all registration, coaching, regular practices, extra (optional) practice sessions*, and game fees for fall and spring regular season games, as well as a four-day pre-season team camp in late July/early August, and a four-day May Development Camp. Fees for players joining the program through the winter break for the spring season are approximately half the annual fees. Uniform package and tournament fees are not included. * Optional practices are weekly during the regular season, and typically include Speed & Agility sessions, Goalkeeper sessions, Footskills and Finishing sessions etc. Sessions and session schedules vary by location.

FAQs

FAQs:

1. My child is on the Rec program, how does Academy compare with respect to schedule and costs?

Academy soccer requires both a greater time commitment and a greater financial commitment compared with Rec soccer. The season typically starts earlier than Rec and finishes later than Rec, with an Academy player usually playing between 12 and 16 games per season compared with 8 or 9 for the typical Recreational player. Players will typically have two team practices a week, plus the opportunity to attend extra skills sessions each week to accelerate their development. With respect the costs, the greater financial commitment is partly a reflection of the fact that Academy coaches are professional, licensed, staff rather than parent/volunteer coaches.

2. How are players assigned to teams?

Players are initially accepted into each Academy age group pool (U9, U10, U11, U12) through a tryout/assessment process at the start of the season. Once accepted into the pool, a player is then assigned to a team roster on week-to-week basis to play against other metro Atlanta clubs on Saturdays or the occasional Sunday afternoon fixture. This process typically reflects a 'level-to-level' schedule whereby SSA's teams are ranked and then play against similarly ranked teams from the opposing club. Players are usually assigned to teams based on their level of competitiveness relative to all the players in their pool, but this may be adjusted week-to-week depending on the program director's developmental objectives both for the player and for the program.

3. Are standings kept?

No, standings are not kept. While Academy games are competitive, the focus on development means that there isn't a record of games kept and there is no league standings published.

4. How are players selected through the tryout/assessment process?

While technical ability is a factor in the process, as a club we are as much focused on establishing a player's level of commitment to his/her development as a predictor of suitability for the program as anything else. The Academy program is first and foremost a player development program, so the focus is on creating an environment where a player's skills improve from the beginning to the end of their Academy careers as a means to best prepare them for their Select and High School soccer experiences.
